Meet Keith Beauchamp, the director of The Untold Story of Emmett Louis Till
23.11.2005
THE UNTOLD STORY OF EMMETT LOUIS TILL
The director, Keith Beauchamp will present the film, and be there for a Q/A after the film, screening today at Tancred, Filmens Hus, 17.00. Not to be missed.
This is a documentary about the circumstances surrounding the murder of Emmett Louis Till. This murder is by many considered the catalyst behind the American Civil Rights Movement, and inspired the work of Martin Luther King, Muhammed Ali, James Baldwin, Harper Lee, Toni Morrisson, Bob Dylan and many more.
In 1955 Mamie Till-Mobley sent her only child, 14-year-old Emmet, to visit relatives in Mississippi. Only 8 days later, he was abducted, brutally beaten and murdered for one of the oldest Southern taboos, addressing a white woman in public. The murderers were soon arrested but later acquitted by an all-white, all-male jury. His death sparked national media attention when his mother insisted on an open casket at the funeral to let the world know what they had done to him. Many have studied the murder of Emmett since then, and even after five decades people are still fascinated and troubled by the case. In 2004 the US Justice Department reopened the investigation, citing this film as the main momentum and starting point for their investigation.
Keith Beauchamp has studied Criminal Justice, and has worked in music video production. In 1999 he founded Till Freedom Come Productions, and has devoted nine years to pursuing justice for Emmett Till. Next year there will be a feature film about Keith Beauchamp and his fight for the rights of Emmett Till.
